{"id":215,"date":"2019-06-06T11:57:23","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T01:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disciplingasyougo.com\/?p=215"},"modified":"2019-06-06T12:03:11","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T02:03:11","slug":"the-role-of-the-spirit-in-discipleship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/disciplingasyougo.com\/?p=215","title":{"rendered":"The Role of the Spirit in Discipleship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One\nof the legacies of Modern thinking that has been adopted by the Church leads us\nto believe that discipleship is a teaching course, an enculturation process\ninto a Christian group or a process of ticking competency boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a long way from the biblical and historical belief that discipleship is first and foremost a growing relationship between a person and God\u2019s Holy Spirit that does not simply begin suddenly at some magical moment when a person \u201cis converted\u201d, \u201cbecomes a Christian\u201d, \u201cjoins a church\u201d or however else we might express a spiritual connection with Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psalm 139 firmly reminds us that\neven before we were born God knew us and was aware of our formation in the\nwomb. So when does the Holy Spirit of God begin to relate to a person? From the\nmoment of conception! It\u2019s unusual to find a person who cannot say: \u201cI was\naware of God when this happened\u201d or \u201cI think someone\/something was trying to\nget my attention at that moment\u201d or some other statement of awareness of something\noutside of ourselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may have a part in guiding and\nencouraging the process but it is God\u2019s Holy Spirit who is drawing, touching\nand transforming a disciple (or a future disciple) from the inside out. There\nhas been a strong emphasis, in our discipling methodologies, on telling our\nstory to others. But it\u2019s more important that we draw out another person\u2019s\nstory, and listen carefully for the thread of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Our\nrole is not to make someone\u2019s story identical to ours but to foster their\nrelationship with Jesus and to cooperate with what He is already doing in their\nlives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, we will follow the\ninjunction in Matthew 28 of \u201cteaching them to obey\u201d as the Spirit speaks to\nthem and they do as He says. When we stop at \u201cteaching them\u201d, our tendency is\nto tell them everything we know, to build knowledge rather than obedience. This\nmay build dependency on us as the spiritual experts but it will never build\nfirmly established followers of Jesus. Where correction or guidance is needed,\nit will happen in the context of the deepening relationship experienced between\nthe disciple and Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Matthew 13, Jesus tells the\nparable of the Sower who scatters seed about his field. Some seed falls along\nthe path where it is quickly snatched by birds. Some seed falls on rocky ground\nwhere it withers and dies. Some seed falls among thorns where it eventually\nchokes. But other seed falls on good soil where it produces a\nhundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. I wonder why we see few who\nrespond to Jesus and then produce the hundredfold Jesus spoke of in the parable.\nIn fact, we would probably be hardpressed to identify many who produce thirtyfold\nand sixtyfold. We spend so much time trying to look after the many who have\njust connected a little with their Creator but do not grow, are lost in their\nproblems or want to live as they did before the journey to Jesus began. We need\nto invest time in fostering the relationship between genuine disciples and\ntheir Lord and Master. Otherwise we end up with cookie-cutter Christians who remain\nfor a while in our church culture but do not really know how to function\nauthentically as the unique Spirit-led disciple each of us is meant to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our book <em>As You Go, Make Disciples\u2026, <\/em>we spoke of the concept of bounded and centred sets. <strong>Bounded Set<\/strong>: Modern discipleship methods are often used as a way to bring about outward behavioural modi\ufb01cation rather than inward transformation. People are expected to follow a set of rules, tick a set of boxes and, when that is done, everything\u2019s settled. With the emphasis on the boundary, you are in if you do certain things and out if you neglect to do these things. You are a Christian if you adhere to a preconceived set of rules. These may be theological or ethical in nature with some variations from one group of christians to another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"347\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplingasyougo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Role-of-the-Spirit-in-Diacipleship.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/disciplingasyougo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Role-of-the-Spirit-in-Diacipleship.jpg 454w, https:\/\/disciplingasyougo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Role-of-the-Spirit-in-Diacipleship-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>Centred Set: <\/strong>The alternative is to see that the emphasis is on Jesus as the Centre and a disciple is someone who is moving towards Jesus. So the question becomes not: \u201cAre you saved?\u201d (even though the moment or process of spiritual change is important) but \u201cIn which direction are you moving?\u201d We are either moving towards Jesus or away from Him. We are never standing still. As we disciple, we are looking for people whose direction is towards Jesus. This means that each journey is unique; each person\u2019s shape is different. Some people are close to Jesus but are in the process of walking away, while others are a long way from Him but are walking towards Him. Discipling becomes an incredible trust journey of watching God change the life of a person as we discard the set of rules, walk alongside and watch God form a new creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"347\" height=\"305\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplingasyougo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Role-of-the-Spirit-in-Discipleship.2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/disciplingasyougo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Role-of-the-Spirit-in-Discipleship.2.jpg 347w, https:\/\/disciplingasyougo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Role-of-the-Spirit-in-Discipleship.2-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discipleship is centred on a\nrelationship with Jesus not a set of rules that need to be measured to ensure\nsomeone is going well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the legacies of Modern thinking that has been adopted by the Church leads us to believe that discipleship is a teaching course, an enculturation process into a Christian group or a process of ticking competency boxes.
